Player guide

How to play, by role: newcomer, merchant, banker, showman, landlord, builder, patron.

How to play Medici by role. The full in-game guide is The Merchant's Handbook (Patchouli: book + gold nugget).

The newcomer

  1. Make a leather purse (string, 3 leather). Coins you walk over go into it.
  2. Kill pillagers, witches and zombie villagers that spawned on their own: they carry a few pennies. Open chests in villages and outposts.
  3. Find a trading house in town. When the Merchant is there, deliver what he wishes for. That's the easiest honest money.
  4. Spend it in other players' market stalls and vending machines instead of grinding everything yourself.

The merchant

  1. Craft a market stall (wool, planks, a penny) or, later, a vending machine.
  2. Click an item onto an offer slot (the stack size is how many per sale) and type the price, like 1g 5p.
  3. Put stock in below, or open the back face for a hopper, pipe or AE2 interface (owner screen, face buttons).
  4. Switch an offer to Buys to buy from other players out of your till. Collect the till with Collect.
  5. 2 % of every sale is market duty. Price for it.

Create's table-cloth shops or a vending machine? Coins work as the price in Create's table-cloth shops like any item (a penny, a groat or a ducat each). Use a table cloth for a quick stall that takes one exact coin kind and gives no change. Use a vending machine or market stall when prices aren't a whole number of one coin: they take any mix of coins and purses and make change, keep a till, and show up in Jade and on computers. Machines that click for you (deployers and the like) can't buy at Medici shops unless the server turns on automationCustomers.

The banker

  1. Place a bank counter. Anyone can bank there; a villager working at it becomes a Banker.
  2. Deposit, withdraw in the coins you want, transfer to PlayerName or team:Name (1 % fee).
  3. Sell letters of exchange: coins sealed into paper, made out to someone or to the bearer.
  4. Your ledger shows debit and credit anywhere. Keep reserves in a strongbox.

The minter

  1. Build a mint press and dies (steel, diamond, the metal). Power it.
  2. Each strike needs your house's share of today's decree. /medici decree shows what's left.
  3. Your team is a house: you share the allowance. Mint early in the day; it refills at dawn (server time).
  4. With Create: a striking block under a Mechanical Press (two blocks down, where a depot would go) is a mint that runs on rotation instead of FE. Load a die and metal (or open a face to a funnel); each stroke strikes coins from the same house share. Sneak-right-click a side to open it for automation. Ponder shows how (hold W).

The showman

  1. Build your ride, maze or museum. Put turnstiles at the entrance (solid for everyone but the payer).
  2. Set a price on the turnstile, or 0 for tickets only.
  3. For tickets: a ticket printer (name the venue, choose single, hour, day, week or season, print from paper), a ticket gate next to the turnstiles (sneak-use one of your tickets on it to link the venue). Sell the tickets from a vending machine.
  4. Turnstiles and gates pulse redstone on every visitor: start a Create contraption, count riders with a computer.
  5. A pay room that can't be broken into: build it from SecurityCraft's reinforced blocks with a reinforced iron door, and put a coin slot, ticket gate or turnstile right next to the door. Reinforced doors ignore ordinary redstone, but they open for these.

The landlord

  1. Place a rental chest, set the price per day and the longest rent.
  2. Renters pay at the chest; only they open it until the rent ends, plus a day's grace.

The adventurer

Bosses sit on hoards. Treasure and wrecks hold ducats, antique coins and drowned merchants' letters. Antique coins are worth something only once a bank counter appraises them.

The gondolier

Craft a larch gondola (five larch planks and a gold nugget for the prow comb) and dye it black for a lacquered gondola. The first to board stands on the stern and steers; two more sit in front. It is slower than a boat and turns slowly, and it will not slide on ice. Tie it to a fence or a mooring ring with a lead.

The pigeon fancier

Pigeons come down in daylight on Venetian ground (Medici paving, terrazzo, quays, Istrian stone, marble and roof tiles), keep with their flock and drink at a wellhead, a wellhead basin or a lion wall fountain (a glass bottle fills from the last two). Run at them, or hurt one, and the flock goes up to the nearest roof; sneak and you can walk among them. Seeds tempt them, and now and then one drops a feather. Feeding them is not fined.

Feed one seeds and now and then it stays with you: a tame pigeon follows you (right-click to make it sit) and moves into your dovecote when you bring it within 16 blocks (six to a dovecote). Name the dovecote in an anvil before placing it: the name is its address, unique in the dimension. Open it, put a letter of exchange or a purse in the outbox, choose another dovecote by name and press Send. The pigeon takes off from the ridge with the cargo in its feet, flies a block a tick, lands in the other dovecote's inbox and comes home. Deliveries never fail: if the other dovecote is gone or its inbox full, the pigeon brings the cargo home; if home is gone too, it comes down where home stood with the cargo at its feet. Coins go only inside a purse and stay coins the whole way.

The builder

The Medici: Building tab holds the Venetian set: Istrian stone, Venetian brick, plaster in eight colours, Gothic tracery, marbles, terrazzo and gold mosaic, roofs, the waterfront, bridges and streets, windows, wood and interiors (BLOCKS.md). Stone shapes come from the stonecutter. Dye any eight plasters to recolour them. Windows, arcades, the ogee doorway and the compass rose are multi-block pieces: the block you click is the bottom-left part, and the piece grows to your right and up (on the floor, to your right and away from you). Breaking any part breaks the whole piece and gives back one item.

Showcases. An operator can place a finished example with /medici showcase <name> [pos], or with no name to list them. The build's north-west bottom corner goes at your feet (or at pos). It clears its own space, so stand somewhere open. Each one is a set to start from:

name what it shows
canal_house a red plaster house on a canal: water gate, ogee windows round a multi-light window, balcony, chimney, mooring poles
bank_hall compass-rose terrazzo, Corinthian columns, the bank counter, strongbox, ledger desk, damask, a painted ceiling
mint brick walls, the mint press, a fireplace with its hood, a funnel chimney
market_square trachyte paving with Istrian borders, a wellhead, market stalls, lanterns, benches, bollards
bridge a stone bridge over a canal: steps, arch, parapets, lantern posts
palazzo_facade a Gothic front: tall arcades, balcony, multi-light window, pink-and-white lozenges, cable moulding, cornice
gondola_ride a ticketed ride: ticket printer, ticket gate and turnstile on the quay, a landing stage, mooring ring
pay_room a coin slot beside an iron door opens a small museum of carvings, under a tiled roof
toll_bridge a humped larch footbridge on piles, and a toll booth with a ticket gate and turnstile across its end

| carousel | (with Create) a ticket gate starts a sequenced gearshift that turns a bearing ride once around |

Building from the showcases. Each one is also a Create schematic in docs/examples/schematics/: copy the .nbt into your instance's schematics/ folder and print it with a schematicannon in survival (Create reads vanilla structure files). What each build teaches:

  • canal_house: plaster on brick, the waterline variant at the bottom, ogee windows round a multi-light window, a balcony slab, roof tiles with a ridge and a chimney pot; the canal in front is a closed canal-wall basin, so the water stays put wherever you place it.
  • palazzo_facade: a whole front from tracery pieces: pointed arcades at the bottom, a balcony and a multi-light window above, lozenge marble between Istrian quoins, cable moulding at the corners, a dentil cornice on top.
  • bank_hall and mint: finished houses with interiors. Compass-rose terrazzo (a 3 × 3 floor piece), Corinthian columns, damask on the walls, the bank counter and strongbox behind tall leaded windows, a dentil cornice and a balustrade on the lead roof; the mint shows the press with a fireplace and its hood under a tiled gable roof.
  • market_square: trachyte paving with Istrian border lines, a wellhead, stalls, lanterns and benches, closed on the south by two shop houses with shop doors, awnings, signs, flower boxes and tiled roofs. Start a town square from it.
  • bridge and toll_bridge: bridge steps up to an arch with joined parapets and lantern posts; a larch footbridge that steps up to a crown on two piles, with rails and lantern posts, and a toll booth (hip roof, glazed hatch) whose ticket gate and turnstile close the bridge's end. Both span a closed canal section.
  • gondola_ride, pay_room, carousel: the three ways to charge admission below.

Paid rides and rooms.

  • Gondola ride: link the ticket gate to your venue and set the turnstile to "tickets only" (price 0). Put your gondola at the landing stage and sneak-use one of the venue's tickets on it: riders then need a ticket to board (single tickets are punched), and you row for free. Gild the prow with four gold leaf.
  • Pay room: set the coin slot's price; it powers the wall beside it, which opens the door. Placed by a player, the door becomes a SecurityCraft reinforced door they own (only the coin slot opens it) and the chunks are claimed for them with FTB Chunks.
  • Carousel: show a ticket at the gate and the ride turns once. Replace the creative motor with your own power. To start only when it's full, use examples/cc/ride.lua: four riders or 30 seconds.

The patron of the arts

  1. Craft a studio easel (a painting on sticks and wool) and set it up in a room with a roof and good light. The Artist arrives at the next dawn and stays while the studio stands.
  2. Talk to him: choose the kind (portrait, city view, statue, fresco, mask, coat of arms, medal, illuminated map, shop sign, glass and lace, colossus), the tier and what that tier lets you choose. The screen shows the price, what chance decides and the odds; nothing is spun, nothing repainted. From Commission tier he draws three sketches and you pick one; at Masterpiece tier you choose everything and it's always a masterwork.
  3. Bring ultramarine (+5 % masterwork) or gold leaf (gilt frames at Commission tier) if you like. You pay from your purse or your bank account; the coins are burned.
  4. Come back when it's done (hours to three days) and take the signed parcel from the easel. Hang portraits and city views, set busts on a floor, put a fresco kit to a ceiling, wear a mask, use a colossus contract on open ground (sneak-use again to build). Sell rare masterworks from a vending machine.
